Sun-loving perennials at the entry
transition to a private retreat of woodland plants at the rear of this
suburban garden. Garden structures add destinations underneath mature oak
trees. Lovingly tended over 20 years.
- GARDEN 2 -
The Garden of Alice & Don Williams
OPEN SATURDAY, JUNE 3 ONLY
A gravel entry drive through a
woodland leads to the walled entry garden. Roses, shrubs and ornamental
trees provide structure for perennials throughout. Camellias, roses,
kerria and daylilies provide a southern charm.
- GARDEN 3 -
The Garden of Owen Halpern & Larry Pritchard
“Hidecote Cottage” is the former
garden of author Anne Rivers Siddons. In the cottage she wrote her 5th
book, PEACHTREE ROAD, called by her friend, Pat Conroy, "the Southern
novel for our generation." Features include a pool, stream and young
perennials amongst the mature shrubs and woodland trees.
- GARDEN 4 -
The Garden of Keith & Karen Summerour
The front garden is formal and is
filled with structure from evergreen plantings. On the side and rear,
hedges enclose garden rooms and provide privacy from the street. Paths
lead through shaded areas and connect to planting beds of herbaceous
perennials.
- GARDEN 5 -
The Garden of Ann Dibble
Walls and fences enclose an entry
garden composed of formally arranged beds. Plantings of foxglove and
annuals peak in spring. The rear garden has paths through woodland
plantings leading to a hidden pond.
- GARDEN 6 -
The Garden of Toby Merlin & Jim Little
A contemporary house, in the Frank
Lloyd Wright style. The garden living spaces are close to the house and
provide shelter from the sun. The garden, designed by Kathy Montgomery,
includes: patio, koi pond, fountain, pots and planters. The main border
contains hydrangeas and shade perennials and groundcovers. The lot next
door was recently purchased with plans for the garden extension.
- GARDEN 7 -
The Garden of Pat & Ted Plomgren
The Plomgren garden was started in
1988 with the help of the late garden designer Dan Franklin, who planned
two separate areas in the rear divided by a stone retaining wall. The
garden features arbors, a rustic “Southern” Garden House, greenhouse as
backdrops for the roses, shrubs, and sun and shade perennials.
- GARDEN 8 -
Historic Oakland Cemetery
Oakland began in 1850 as a six-acre
cemetery and exemplifies the 19th Century movement of the “rural garden”
cemetery, when cemeteries were intended to be used as parks. In the
Victorian spirit, the garden cemetery features winding paths, large shade
trees, flowers, shrubs, and appealing vistas. Oakland is the place to see
magnificent oaks, magnolias, dogwoods, antique roses, butterfly and
perennial gardens. Ticket holders may waive the normal fee for the walking
tours offered this weekend. “Sights, Symbols & Stories of Oakland” will be
offered at 10:00 and 2:00 on Saturday and 2:00 on Sunday. Twilight tours
are offered at 6:30 with “Pioneers of Atlanta: The First 20 Years” offered
on Saturday and “The Women of Oakland” on Sunday. Visit

- GARDEN 9 -
The Garden of Brenda & Gerald Lyle
This southern lady and gentlemen’s
garden includes gardens for sun and shade around the house, garden houses
and swimming pool. A wooded glen contains authentic log cabins circa 1820
lovingly moved and rebuilt on the site. The collection of garden rooms is
a collaborative effort over many years between the Lyles and garden
designer Kathy Montgomery. Charming antique garden art is displayed
throughout. Worth the easy drive and “Not to be missed!”
- GARDEN 10 -
The Garden of Toni & Judy Wright
OPEN SATURDAY, JUNE 3 ONLY
This small suburban garden has focal
display areas for conifers, bog garden, hydrangeas and Japanese maples.
Trellises provide cool refuge from the Southern sun and shelter Toni’s
incredible miniature hosta collection, all labeled…..take a pen and paper! |
