One consequence of
today’s frantic pace is its numbing effect on our ability to savor
fleeting moments of beauty. This year’s symposium, co-sponsored by the
Atlanta Botanical Garden and the Georgia Perennial Plant Association,
celebrates the five senses and suggests ways for enriching your gardening
experience.

In the Eye of the
Beholder: Heavenly Color through the Seasons
Pam Duthie
is the owner of The Gifted Gardener, a landscape design company. She is
the author of Continuous Bloom, the 2001 winner of the Benjamin
Franklin Award for ‘best new garden book of the year’. Her latest book,
Continuous Color: Shrubs & Small Trees for the Continuous Bloom Garden
offers an easily accessible way
to plan a garden starting with shrubs, conifers and small trees and then
deciding the perennial partners that will be included. |

Temptations
Geri Laufer,
horticulturist and author, is the recipient of top awards in both
gardening and garden writing from American Nursery & Landscape
Association, Garden Writers’ Association, Book of the Month Club, Garden
Book Club and the National Cooperative Extension Service. Her home gardens
have appeared in five books and on four national tours. She is the author
of Tussie-Mussies. |

Alchemy of Texture in the Shade
Garden
Mildred Pinnell Fockele
is the Horticulture Director at Atlanta Botanical Garden, responsible for
all outdoor gardens and collections. She is also overseeing the
development of the 185-acre Smithgall Arboretum, a satellite of the
Atlanta Botanical Garden in Gainesville, GA. Mildred lives and gardens in
Gainesville where she has an extensive and renowned shade garden.

Symphony of Sounds: Springs, Songbirds & Serpents
Lee Anne White
is a professional photographer with a passion for plants and an avid
gardener who has broken ground and more than a few shovels in Georgia’s
red clay and Connecticut’s rocky loam. She is the former chief editor of
Fine Gardening magazine and the author, editor and/or photographer of
nearly a dozen books on landscape design. Her most recent titles include
Taunton’s Backyard Idea
Book, Pool Idea Book and
Front Yard Idea Book. She teaches garden photography at the Maine
Photographic Workshops. |

Savoring the Experience
Lucinda Hutson
is a nationally celebrated food, garden, and lifestyle writer. She is the
author of The Herb Garden Cookbook, now in its Second
Edition and seventeenth year of publication. Her colorful recipes were
selected for the covers of Southern Living in May 2001 and the Time-Life
cookbook series Great Meals in Minutes: Mexican Menus. She has
written articles for Fine Gardening, Food & Wine,
Food Arts, The Herb Companion, Kitchen Garden,
Horticulture, Texas Highways, and many other magazines.
