Co-sponsored by the Atlanta Botanical Garden
and Georgia Perennial Plant Association

Saturday, February 7, 2004
Day Hall ABG
8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

"As Time Goes By:

The Evolution of the Garden"

How do we plan for the ever-fluid tapestry of plants, the shifting requirements of our environment and the every-changing needs of the gardener (philosophical, as well as physical)?

This symposium will be devoted to making gardens that improve with the passage of time.

"A Vision of the Evolving Garden"

Holly Shimizu is the keynote speaker.  She is an internationally recognized horticulturist and garden writer, familiar to viewers of The Victory Garden on PBS. She is currently the Executive Director of the U.S.Botanic Garden in Washington D.C. and has assisted with the development of gardens across Europe and the U.S.

"Trees and Shrubs and Their Changing Impact"

Dottie Myers will address planning for changes in the living structure within which our gardens are grown, as well as options for dealing with unplanned and unforeseen alterations in the landscape. She is an award-winning landscape architect and has taught garden design courses at the University of Georgia and Gwinnett Technical Institute.

"Enhancing and Refining with Stone"

Gordon Hayward, a noted designer and lecturer, will discuss the ways stone can enhance the garden. He is the author of five books and numerous articles in such publications as Horticulture and Fine Gardening.

Go to Amazon to buy Gordon Hayward's book and have it signed at the symposium.

"Maintaining a Healthy Garden"

Jim Harrington is a horticulturist and garden designer. He will discuss ways of maintaining a healthy garden by creating environmentally friendly soil, responsibly controlling pests, and managing our limited supply of water. He is a former cooperative extension agent and has been an independent landscape contractor since 1991.

"Perennials For the Long Haul"

David Culp, will speak about new perennials for the southeast that promise to hold their own over the long term.  He is currently the new plant representative for Sunny Border Nurseries and travels extensively, seeking new and unusual perennials.  He is a lecturer at Longwood Gardens, and his Pennsylvania garden has been featured in numerous publications.
